In celebration of the 50th anniversary of UNFPA and the 25th of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, UNFPA launched a book to showcase the changemakers who have made substantial contributions to sexual and reproductive health and rights, and population and development more broadly. UNFPA describes the purpose of this book as giving some sense of how much has been achieved through the efforts of so many – and perhaps to offer inspiration for the future.

At Equimundo, we’re honored that Gary Barker, President and CEO was featured for his decades of work to achieve gender equality and end gender-based violence by engaging men as true partners:

“We will not achieve gender equality if we don’t own our role in the process. As men, this means listening more. It means being aware of our power and privilege…and it means turning our good intentions into meaningful, thoughtful, and urgent action.”

The book highlights incredible global activists, including long-time Equimundo partners:

  • Joni van de Sand and Laxman Belbase of MenEngage Alliance, for their commitment to broadening an understanding of the complexity of the power and privilege that patriarchy grants men and boys, as well as the norms that negatively affect people of all gender identities and expressions;
  • Peter Douglas Weller, a clinical psychologist and professor at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, who presides over the Caribbean Male Action Network or CariMAN, and rejects the notion that gender should just be considered a “woman thing”; and
  • Katja Iverson, Women Deliver President/CEO, who affirms, “We need a health system that is ready to deliver for women whenever a woman is ready to deliver.”
