Engaging Men and Boys in Gender Equality and Advancing the Health, Rights, and Well-being of Girls and Women

Delivering on Gender Equality: A Male Engagement Strategy for Health Programming

Plan International Canada and Equimundo have partnered to implement an innovative male engagement strategy for the five-country Global Affairs Canada-funded program, Strengthening Health Outcomes for Women and their Children (SHOW). Join for a presentation – featuring Equimundo’s Director of Programs Jane Kato-Wallace – and discussion on the approach, implementation and results to date.
The Power of Evidence for Driving Progress and Change

What: To tackle gender inequality, we need to expose, recognize and value women’s lived realities. Strengthening women’s individual leadership and igniting collective action across stakeholders and sectors are equally important to address entrenched discriminatory norms and practices. Hosted by International Development Research Centre (IDRC), this talk-show style panel will showcase impact stories from developing countries about using data to transform unequal gender relations, finding evidence to support men’s meaningful engagement in gender equality, and strengthening women’s capacities in science and math. Equimundo’s President and CEO Gary Barker will be presenting alongside other thought leaders.
Deconstructing the Gendered Causes of Malnutrition

What: Women and girls face unique challenges to attaining good health and nutrition. What are we doing to challenge these, and what can we do better? Join World Vision and partners at this Women Deliver side event as we deconstruct the barriers and build a better approach to integrating gender equality and nutrition. Following a panel discussion by leaders in nutrition policy, delivery, and financing, participants will engage in facilitated sessions to identify gaps and develop recommendations for advancing our work at the intersection of nutrition and gender equality.

Gender Equality Starts Early: Interventions to transform gender norms among very young adolescents
When: 6:00am – 8:00am, Tuesday, June 4, 2019
Where: Fairmont Waterfront Hotel, Mackenzie Ballroom
What: Early adolescence (ages 10-14) is a period of rapid change and considerable opportunity. While very young adolescents (VYA) are increasingly impacted by gender inequality, they may also be most amenable to change. This session will highlight how interventions that target VYA, their families, and communities can catalyze change in gendered attitudes, behaviors, and norms and improve health outcomes for adolescents. The session will feature three programs, led by Equimundo in Malawi, Rutgers in Indonesia, and Save the Children in Democratic Republic of Congo, which are all being evaluated by the Global Early Adolescent Study, a multi-country investigation into how gender norms evolve and inform a spectrum of health-related outcomes in adolescence.

Sharing is caring, but is it enough? Gender-transformative approaches to shifting the unequal care burden

What: Join Oxfam and Equimundo at an panel event focused on shifting the unequal care burden. In order to address women’s and girls’ unequal burden of care and promote their social, political and economic empowerment, a gender-transformative approach needs to be incorporated into existing and future programming to transform unequal power relations and harmful gender norms that actively shifts individual’s attitudes and behaviors – as well as narratives and perceptions in communities and institutions. Equimundo’s President and CEO Gary Barker will be speaking on the panel.
Men, Masculinity, and a Modern Playbook for Gender Equality

What: Women’s voices are louder than ever on topics of health, wealth, harassment, safety, and the right to lead, yet progress has stalled. We must do better. We need a more modern playbook which includes the role of men as we collectively redefine masculinity and re-envision traditional structures. Moreover, we must create policies and cultural interventions that set an expectation for men to be equal partners at home, in the workplace and in society. This Concurrent Session is hosted by P&G and will feature Equimundo’s Gary Barker.
The Power of Agency: Changemakers on surviving and preventing gender-based violence
When: 1:30pm – 2:30pm PDT, Tuesday, June 4

What: Girls and women are too often portrayed as victims, when they are in fact powerful agents of change. In this session, we will hear from survivors of gender-based violence and advocates working to create change in their communities and around the globe. Through the stories of people who’ve escaped child marriage, mobilized against female genital cutting, lived on the run as migrants, survived Boko Haram, and endured life as a child soldier, The Power of Agency will explore the connection between gender-based violence and gender inequality – and the power that comes with bodily autonomy and agency. Equimundo Senior Fellow Michael Kaufman will be among the presenters.
The Lancet Series on Gender Equality, Norms, and Health

What: The newly launched Lancet Series explores how restrictive gender norms affect every aspect of peoples’ wellbeing. The Series offers new theoretical perspectives and evidence on what causes gender inequality and what works to address it, culminating in a call to action. Hosted by Stanford University, hear key authors – including Equimundo’s Gary Barker – present their findings and reactions from experts. Join us for a disruptive session and help us create a movement to knock down barriers to gender equality.
Can “unlearning” violence be the key to transforming harmful gender norms?

What: Hosted by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), this panel event will discuss meaningful engagement with men and boys as a critical approach to gender equality and equity – necessary not only for women’s empowerment, but also for transforming the social and gender norms that reinforce patriarchy and inequality and harm both women and men. Programs that guide men and boys to “unlearn” violent behavior are a growing strategy for challenging the gender norms and masculine ideals that sustain gender inequality. This roundtable will offer a creative, collective platform for critical reflection and dialogue among implementers, researchers, donors and other stakeholders regarding the promises and effectiveness of initiatives to unlearn violence. Equimundo’s Senior Advisor Dean Peacock will speak on the panel.
Men Care: Unlocking Paternity Leave’s Power to Advance Gender Equality

What: Unilever’s Dove Men+Care brand and Equimundo are hosting a catered, interactive evening session to announce the creation of a global Corporate Task Force to champion access for paternity leave for all fathers. The task force has brought together progressive companies, experts and non-profit organisations with the resources and passion to catalyse meaningful change in the provision and take up of decent paternity leave policies. Come join Alan Jope, CEO of Unilever, and Gary Barker, President and CEO of Equimundo, share their thoughts on the importance of paternity leave and their vision for the global task force.

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Innovathon 2019: Co-Creating Solutions to Prevent and Combat Violence Against Women and Girls Worldwide

What: Pro Mujer in partnership with Hivos, The Womanity Foundation and Kering Foundation will host a cross-sectorial session focused on the emergence of collaborative projects aimed at finding high impact solutions against gender-based violence (GBV) globally. Approximately 50 selected Women Deliver participants of diverse gender, cultural, professional backgrounds and geographic experiences to exchange insights on a specific challenge of GBV. As a part of this partnership, Equimundo’s digital content will be shared in Pro Mujer’s Latin American Pavillion during the conference.

The 2019 report will reveal new data and analysis from over 40 countries, launched at a Concurrent Lunch Session at the Women Deliver Conference in Vancouver, Canada on Wednesday, June 5.

The Power of Lift: Stepping up to use power for good (Plenary Event)

What: Achieving gender equality will take all of us using our power for good. Regardless of age, gender, sexuality, geography, income, or title, each of us has a role to play. It will take privileged populations and marginalized people pulling up chairs to the same table. What: Organized by WHO Gender, Equity and Human Rights, and Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) this Power of Community session is an interactive dialogue between civil society and health policy decision-makers to examine the importance of gender-responsiveness in universal health coverage. Conversation will address how universal health coverage policies and programs can advance women and girls’ leadership, health, and human rights – including sexual and reproductive health and rights, and how we can generate understanding of actions needed to address and overcome inequities and barriers. What: Organized by Ipas, Equimundo, and CHOICE, this meeting will provide a platform to identify and promote strategies to advance the dialogue around sexuality education and how to promote comprehensive programs. The focus and major theme will be to discuss and identify challenges and gaps as well as agree on key strategies and actions for the future to support the implementation of programs that are comprehensive based on evidence and international agreements. The meeting will help to create a plan on how to move forward on issues that are considered problematic or too controversial to be included in sexuality education programs.
