Promoting Gender Justice from DC to DRC |
In September, Equimundo launched its research report “She goes with me in my boat”: Child and Adolescent Marriage in Brazil in Brasilia; in Washington, DC, we continued the conversation about what it takes to end child marriage on a global scale. In the same month, we used the arts to engage youth in promoting racial and gender equality in Brazil, while in Democratic Republic of the Congo, we celebrated the completion of the country’s first round of Living Peace groups.
In October, we joined thousands in Rio de Janeiro fighting for a woman’s right to make autonomous decisions about her body and sexuality – including the right to safe and legal abortion. And, in Washington, DC, we worked to raise awareness about the importance of paid parental leave for improving child development, helping families, and promoting equality in pay for women.
In our featured interview, you’ll get to know Gilmara Cunha, a recognized LGBT activist in Brazil. Gilmara is the Founder and General Coordinator of Grupo Conexão G, a non-governmental organization that works with the LGBT population in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. She is also the first transgender person to receive the highest award of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the Tiradentes Medal, for her activism.
