The 2018 International Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) Summit featuring Entertainment Education takes place April 16-20 in Nusa Dua, Indonesia, and Equimundo is presenting its evidence-based approaches to engaging men and boys in gender equality and care, including best practices from MenCare: A Global Fatherhood Campaign, which Equimundo co-coordinates.
The collective power of people to transform the social and political structures that govern their lives is the heart of development, and it is one of the keys to progress on gender equality. Social and behavior change communication (SBCC) engages and supports people to shift norms, change behaviors, and amplify the voices needed to address the persistent development challenges the world faces today: extreme poverty, gender inequalities, public health emergencies, acute and chronic diseases, climate change, and democracy and governance, among others.

This session will feature TED-style talks, including one that will focus on MenCare’s evidence-based approaches to promoting men’s involvement as equitable fathers and caregivers around the world, why that’s important, and how we can work together to achieve a global goal of men and boys doing 50% of the unpaid care work.

While many projects focus on women and children, men’s voices and support are also needed to build gender-equitable societies. This panel highlights how programs are using SBCC tools to engage men in challenging social norms by promoting the idea of men as nonviolent, supportive caregivers who are actively engaged in the lives of their spouses and children. It will feature a presentation of MenCare’s film Join the Movement: Time for Action and a breakdown of best practices in MenCare’s global messaging.
Gender Harmful Social Practices-Child Norms

Speakers in this panel come from a mix of academic researchers and NGO practitioners that developed and used innovative data-collection techniques to study child marriage and intimate partner violence. Four case studies will be presented focusing on social norms that sustained these two gender-related harmful practices in four low-income countries: Cameroon, Ethiopia, Nepal, and Tanzania (which will highlight findings from Equimundo’s International Men and Gender Equality Survey, or IMAGES, in the country).
Keeping Men Engaged for Change

This panel, moderated by Equimundo, will present successful SBCC approaches used in interventions in Northern Uganda, Mumbai, and Nigeria to achieve lower rates of intimate partner violence and corporal punishment through community-based mentoring of young fathers; fewer railway-related fatalities; and positive shifts in spousal communication through male-orientated radio programs.
