Today begins the sixty-first session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. From March 13 to 24, representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) will attend sessions on the priority theme, “Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work.”

Equimundo is co-sponsoring several events, and will be presenting successful approaches to engaging men and boys for gender equality, with a focus on promoting men’s caregiving and scaling up successful programs and policies globally.

Strengthening Civil Society and Government Partnerships to Scale Up Gender-Transformative Approaches to Engaging Men and Boys

UNFPA, Equimundo, and the MenEngage Alliance will host a side event to launch the new publication Engaging Men and Boys for Gender Equality and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights: Strengthening Civil Society Organizations and Government Partnerships to Scale Up Approaches, with the aim of raising awareness and highlighting key successes and challenges ahead for realizing a truly gender-transformative Agenda 2030.

Care Policies in the Agenda 2030: Advancing the Triple R Framework to Recognize, Reduce, and Redistribute Unpaid Care Work

The unequal distribution of unpaid care work is a critical factor for understanding structural constraints to women’s economic empowerment, as well as women’s participation and leadership more broadly. The side event will discuss the various aspects of unpaid care work and will share strategies and practical approaches to recognize, reduce, and redistribute unpaid care work in order to advance the implementation of Target 5.4 of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Barbershop Toolbox: Changing the Discourse Among Men & Boys on Gender Equality

Building on successful Barbershop Conferences organized around the world, which have created a space for men and boys to engage in gender equality discussions, the Government of Iceland has developed a Barbershop toolbox with the MenEngage Alliance and UN Women. The toolkit will enable supporters to replicate the discussion in their communities, workplaces, and schools. This side event will launch the toolbox and present strategies to involve men and boys in working for gender equality.
