Welcome to this course, co-developed by Equimundo and Boys Impact! .

Every boy who walks into a classroom brings curiosity, energy, and a desire to belong. School doesn’t always make room for that. When something gets in the way, boys start to pull back and it’s easy to read that as attitude, or as not caring.

This course is about seeing what’s really going on underneath that pulling back, and what you, as an educator, can do about it.

One thing up front: this isn’t about shifting focus away from girls’ education. The gains made for girls matter and should continue. At Equimundo, we believe that supporting boys does not mean girls lose out, and vice versa this is additive, not competing.

There are two ways to approach a boy who’s struggling. One starts from deficit: naming what’s wrong with him unmotivated, disruptive, behind and trying to fix it. We find that approach can do real damage. It shames boys who are already discouraged, treats symptoms instead of causes, and can reinforce the very idea that struggling makes you less of a man that pushed him to disengage in the first place.

This course takes the other approach: strengths-based. We start with what a boy already brings curiosity, a sense of fairness, a playful energy, a drive to belong and ask what’s getting in the way of that showing up as engagement in your classroom. Boys aren’t the problem to be solved. Our job is to find and clear what’s working against them.
