It details the inception of a groundbreaking program to its transformative impact in two West African nations: Guinea and Mali, where a project implemented by UNFPA was strengthened with Equimundo’s support, emphasizing the power of cross-issue collaboration.

UNFPA West and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) started a partnership with Equimundo in 2018 for their SWEDD project, which aims to stimulate the demographic dividend, reduce gender inequalities, and improve family planning in the region. The primary goal of this collaboration was to introduce gender-transformative approaches (GTA) into UNFPA’s Husbands and Future Husbands Schools (HS, FHS), where despite achieving remarkable results, gender equality and women’s empowerment remained significant gaps.

As an expert in the field of masculinities and male engagement, Equimundo was invited to provide technical assistance and training to HS facilitators and trainers in order for them to see changes in harmful masculine norms.

The Husbands Schools grew from six countries initially to thirteen, with Equimundo offering continuous technical assistance and learning from each country’s unique experiences. To distinguish this modified program from traditional Husbands Schools, Equimundo introduced a new name – CDM/CDFM (Club des Maris [Husbands Club/HC] and Club des Futurs Maris [Future Husbands Club/FHC]) – adapted to the local context in each country.

Shamsi Kazimbaya, Senior Program Officer at Equimundo, visited Guinea, a new country in the SWEDD project, and Mali, one of the experienced countries, to see what was happening on the ground, how communities embraced the program, to hear their stories of change and understand how Husbands Clubs are helping men to shifts norms to become more involved in their families’ lives. The trip also intended to record any challenges encountered.

During her visit to Guinea, Shamsi facilitated an orientation workshop in Kindia. Traditional Husbands, known locally as “Maris Modèles,” were invited to share their experiences and learn how the CDM/CDFM approach differed from the traditional one. One Mari Modèle (model husband), after the first day’s discussions, realized he had much to learn and immediately applied his newfound insights to improve communication with his wife, calling her that evening and noticing how differently and positively their communication went –– a total shift from the way he used to communicate with her before. When he later shared his story, everyone in the room was amazed by it.

In Guinea, the workshop included two activities from the CDM manuals: gender values clarification and an exploration of power dynamics. These activities revealed that while Maris Modèles believed they were promoting gender equality, some of their thoughts inadvertently reinforced gender inequality. For example, one Mari Modèle believed that women should acknowledge men as more intelligent to maintain harmony in the household, while another thought women’s financial empowerment caused problems and eventually led to divorce.

“Persons and Things” Activity

These insights highlight the importance of Equimundo’s work in challenging traditional gender norms in these communities. For example, the “Persons and Things” (used during the workshop in Guinea, see pictures above), an activity from the Husbands Clubs curriculum, is a powerful, transformative and sometimes emotional exercise because it raises participants’ awareness about the existence of power in relationships, helps them to reflect on how people communicate and demonstrate power, and its impact. During the discussions following the exercise, participants reflected about gender and relationships between men and women in their community, making connections between how one might feel oppressed, or treated like “objects” in some of their relationships and how they, in turn, might treat others like “objects.” It ultimately encourages thinking about how these connections can help motivate participants to construct more equitable relationships with women in their homes and communities.

The situation in Mali, however, paints a contrasting picture. Men in Mali proudly shared how they have changed and decided to break the cultural barriers to get more involved in the lives of their families, sharing household chores with their wives and caring for their children, for instance.

A visit to a Husbands Club in the village of Fougani in Mali reveals the story of Modibo, who proudly describes his transition into a “model husband” by actively participating in traditional women’s roles, such as cooking. His friend’s reaction, shouting “Gnougoutiguè Modibo” or “Modibo, spinach cutter,” captures the humor and resilience in their pursuit of change.

Modibo, facilitating

The men, often called “tiemoussoman” (men who became like women), remain undeterred by labels.
