What happens when fathers step up to share the care? The film accompanies MenCare’s Situação da Paternidade no Mundo: Hora de Agir 2017 report, which lays out a bold agenda for men’s equal participation in unpaid care work – a vital step toward achieving gender equality.
Globally, on average, the time women spend daily on caring for the home and children is still three times what men spend. The second-ever Estado da Paternidade no Mundo report – produced by Equimundo for Cuidado Masculino: A Global Fatherhood Campaign – draws from nearly 100 research studies and reports, with data from nearly every country where it is available. Estado da Paternidade no Mundo 2017 offers an analysis of men’s caregiving, and calls for a global goal and national action plans for men and boys doing fully 50 percent of the world’s unpaid care work.
Findings from the report indicate that many men fazer want to be more involved in care work. Even in certain countries where men’s involvement in care work is limited, half or more of men surveyed said that they spent too little time with their children because of their job.
The report reveals what has impeded progress toward equality: gender norms that stereotype caregiving as “women’s work,” inequitable and inflexible economic and workplace realities, and laws and policies that discourage men from taking equal part in care work. Estado da Paternidade no Mundo 2017 highlights specific recommendations for action and practical steps for change.
