The Pilot

Beginning in 2013, Bandebereho, Kinyarwanda for “role model,” is an adaptation of Equimundo’s Programme P to engage fathers throughout Rwanda.

Seeking to inspire men’s participation in unpaid care labor, Bandebereho’s pilot included both soon-to-be and new fathers in a curriculum surrounding reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH), caregiving, and violence prevention.

Following the initial 15 pilot and 17 scale up sessions, participating parents reported:

  • Increases in men’s participation in childcare and household tasks.
  • Increases in women’s participation in household decision-making.
  • Reductions in intimate partner violence experience by women.
  • Reduced usage of violence against children.

Read the brief to learn about the 10 steps that led from the program’s start to government integration.
